A Question For Cloth Diapering Mommies?

I have been wanting to switch to cloth for a while now, but not sure which diapers work best….All-in-one, or pocket? and why? Any reccomendations on good (cheap) diapers? How many will I need (my son goes diaper-free for a good portion of the day)?

Good for you with Elimination Communication! I work (hubby SAHD) so not an option for us, since my husband thinks I’m nuts, but I’ve always been intrigued.
We use all pocket diapers, a combination of BumGenius 3.0, Blueberry one sized and Blueberry sized. Pockets are best because you can customize the absorbency and they dry quicker because you can take all the pieces apart. If you are looking for a cheaper route this might not be the way to go though as they are each $17-$25 a piece. If you only need diapers for part of the day why not just try regular prefolds and a cover? Bummis sells a box kit that includes so many prefolds and a few covers (I’ll put a link at the bottom). The covers can be dried out in between and reused every other diaper or so. If you want cheap pockets the cheapest is BumGenius 3.0, they are one sized and work from about 10 lb – 30 lb. They say 8 lb but they didn’t fit Elyse until she was 3 months or so. I do not recommend AIO because of the long drying time.http://www.cottonbabies.comhttp://www.bumgenius.comhttp://www.blueberrydiapers.comhttp://www.bummis.com/en/Products/covers…
Here’s a really helpful WAHM site about diaper care and she sells dipes too, I bought most of my stash from her:http://pinstripesandpolkadots.com/basics…
The number of diapers depends on how many you will use a day. You want to wash every 2-3 days so count the number you’ll need and times two (unless you want to wash daily). We have a total of 24 diapers and can go 3 days but our washer doesn’ t hold that many so we wash every other day. We use diapers all day long though…
Good luck!
Nothing really about your question, but I am a Canadian living in China and diapers are fairly new here. Babies here wear “split pants”–basically the crotch seam is split leaving everything open down below
At 12 days old potty training begins. Adults (mom, dad, and grandparents) take turns holding the baby in a sitting position while emitting a low whistle-type sound until the baby goes. Each day the caregiver will hold the child this way and whistle until the baby connects the whistle with going to the bathroom. Most children are trained by the time they can walk, if not sooner. So, culture aside, I applaud your efforts in allowing you son to be diaper-free and being aware of his needs!
I have a stash of fuzzibunz, prefolds with bummis covers and a few bamboozle that we use for nightime diapering. I have way too many cloth diapers – I think if you had 18 dipaers, you could wash every 2-3 days.
Like you though, we don’t go through a lot of diapers during the day – she sits on her potty at every diaper change – and often the same diaper goes right back on. Poos are so much easier to catch, and we love the fact that we hardly ever have to clean poo off her bum. And no diaper rashes since poo goes straight into the potty – woohoo
She is 9 months old, and started using the potty at 5 months.
That is great that your son is diaper-free for most of the day. I’d like to know more about how you figured out the signals! I know exactly when my son is pooping, but not when he’s peeing.
Anyway, on to cloth diapers. My son is exclusively in cloth, and we love it. We didn’t pick the cheapest, though. We use Fuzzi Bunz, they are pocket diapers. They wash beautifully and are great with preventing leaks. We have 18, and I wash them every 2-3 days. But, since your son doesn’t wear a diaper some of the day, you could get away with fewer diapers.
Good luck!
I liked Fuzzi Bunz the best, which are a pocket diaper. I liked that they dried faster than the all in ones, and the fit was trimmer and they seemed to fit better and leak less.
You’ll need about the same number of cloth as you do disposables right now. Maybe one or two more. That’s if you do laundry every day. If you launder every other day then you’ll need two day’s worth.
I bought my FB online on Ebay. I used microfiber auto detailing cloths (LOL) from Target because they seemed to work the best for the price. (I folded them in thirds and stuffed them in the pockets. I just stuffed diapers when I folded clothes, and stacked them ready to go at the diaper changing station. They were very easy to use!
FB were easy to clean too, and highly stain resistant. In fact, I sold them on ebay after I had used them through TWO kids, for about what I bought them.
I think it’s great your son goes diaper free…
I don’t know anything about clothe diapers, but I did read yesterday about a different way of ‘potty training’, the way they do it in other countries!http://www.thelaboroflove.com/forum/nov0…
i don’t know much about cloth diapers.. but i have a questions for you.
how do you know when to let your son go diaper free. aren’t you scared he will go pee and poo all over? i try to leave my sons diaper off for a few mins when i’m changing him, but half the time he ends up peeing in the short time its off..
added: omgosh… no way, he goes in the toilet!! how old is he?
I would highly recommend pocket nappies as you can customise the absorbency depending on your baby’s need.
I only have 3 pocket nappies which i rotate for night use only. My baby is 4 and half months and she has been nappy free during day time since one month ago.
