Baby Poo Everywhere! How Can I Stop Things Getting Messy At The Change Table?
My baby is 7 months and as soon as the nappy comes loose = hands are down there!!! Is this a boy thing? It’s like as soon as they’re free he’s gotta grab them! When his nappy is dirty, as oppossed to just wet, he sticks his hands down there and spreads it everywhere, over the change table, over him, over me, and all over the toys I’ve tried to distract him with! I’m still breastfeeding and he’s only on solids once a day at the moment, so it’s still pretty runny stuff, not hard at all. Any ideas? How can I stop it happening?
I have an older boy also and never had this problem with him…

My son did the same thing…I have a special toy that he loves kept on the table so when I change him his hands are busy…I do not let him have it any other time. I also use a spoon, cup, tupperware, anything that in “new and interesting” to keep his mind away from diaper
When my baby had done a very messy poo (now on solids so it’s easier to contain) I used to hold him over a wash basin, take his nappy off and wash his bottom with warm water! Otherwise, same issue – poo everywhere! Also, this is better for the bottom when they are pooing constantly. It’s a little tricky to get the whole holding and washing technique right but once you do it’s a piece of cake.
Also saves baby wipes
I have 3 boys and never had this problem. They didn’t discover their privates until they were about 3yrs old. Is it possible to have someone else hold his hands while you change him? Other then that, you might have to master the one handed change where you do all your cleaning one handed while you hold both of his hands in your other one. I’ve never done it with little hands, but I have held ankles like that to lift the tushy for really messy changes.
Buy some new toys, maybe some adult stuff he isn’t allowed to play with like a cell phone or something, and let him hold the new and exciting stuff during the change.
Hes seen his same old toys. Not very distracting.
My son doesn’t grab at himself, never has.
Give him something “different” to look at. With Noah I give him the tub of baby rub or his Tylenol bottle to look at while I’m changing him. He tries to roll over so it’s easier if he’s occupied.
Our daughter went thru a little phase of doing that; it’s because they’re curious about what is going on down there! The only way I know of to stop it, and it’s how we dealt with it, is to lightly pop their hands for it. It’s not “spanking”; it’s training them so that they don’t do that. It is far worse to have your child stick his hands into something that unsanitary and possibly spread infection, than to have a light slap on the hand. If he learns to associate sticking his hand down there with the slight pain of a pop on the hand, he will stop. I also would give my daughter something to hold in her hands, to distract her as well and keep her hands busy; like a small toy or something. The behavior resolved itself within about a week, I think. Hope this helps!
hmmmm…i too have a 7 month old…boy…he sort of does the same thing…but not to the extent yours is…lol…first off…make sure everything is completly out of his reach so e doesnt get poo on things he doesnt have too…strip him naked so if he gets it on him…its just him…then giv him food to snack on or somthng of tht nature so he is more interrested in the food… then change him…
my son has a rollig over problem every time i change him and he ryes to grab anything and everything he can…i just keep him distracted with anything and everything lol mainly food…good luck hunn
