This story is kind of hard to understand, but if I am reading it right you actually confronted your MIL about the fact that she didn't buy your child a gift? In my opinion, that is rude.
She held your shower in her home. But in your view she "didn't clean up beforehand" and "made macaroni salad."
She may be cheap, but she's also right. You are hard to please.

I understand how you feel, You have all right to feel hurt. However let it go. Some people place their griges before love. Your mother in law obviously doesnt love you a lot and to show you that she ignoring your son and didnt get anything for him. let your son grow up. His attitude will make your mother in law feel guilty. Atleast after you told her how you felt she should have brought something to make it upto you

I would be offended and pissed at my mother-in-law if she did this. I am sorry, but she should have never offered the swing and then backed out and then bought your sister-in-law the dream crib.
She acted very tacky by even mentioning her money hardships to you.
I am like you though were I cannot get over stuff. Once someone does something to me like this I never forget.
I am still upset over the way my inlaws acted at my shower. They were some of the last people to show up. They were the first people to leave. The one food item they brought which was a dessert, they took with them before anyone had even started on desserts. They were rude. My sister took photos of everyone and after the shower we zoomed in on their faces and I have never seen such awful faces and scowls. Two people from their side of the family never called to give regrets, didn't show up and sent some excuse of that they were sick. However, on the gift receipt they had purchased a bunch of other baby gifts for someone else. So basically, they lie about being sick to go to another shower. Have the intelligence to make a separate purchase. The gifts my in-laws brought could have been better. My sis-in-law gave me an outfit for when the child is 18 months old, the other in law gave me a necklace for the baby. My mother in law gave me a nice gift, but gave me no accessories so I had to go spend a lot of money to get the product to work.
I know I sound horrible complaining about the gifts, but my sis in law just got married and they paid for her wedding (it wasnt shabby) and for a gift they gave her a trip to Jamaica. We got 350 spent on us meanwhile they spent 7000 on her trip and over 40000 on her wedding.
In laws can be very funky!!!! I would give my inlaws something very funky or nothing at the next holiday and say that they were just too hard to please. Well, I could write a lot more but I have my 39th week drs appt.
