Can I Use Lactose Free Formulas For A Long Period Of Time?
I have a six month old baby boy who is on lactose free formulas from one month old due to his gasy and colicy stomach. He also showed some signs of silent reflux from two months ago which is under control with Zantac. Although his colic and gas is much better but he seemes alot happier with lactose free formula for his reflux. It is alittle heavier and he will not vomit it easily. But i am worried that maybe I am overusing it. i know he is getting all the nutritions with lactose free formula but i need some information about using it for a long time.

My baby was on Zantac and lactose free formula from about one month til about 6 months. (I tried taking her off it earlier but it didnt work) She’s doing fine on regular formula and tolerates milk products fine (cheese, yogurt) Just give him a little time and then you can try to wean off if you want. My baby is nice and healthy -about 24 pounds at 11 months so I know she was getting the nutrition she needed.
I wouldn’t worry, that’s what it’s made for. I used that with my daughter, as she was gassy with the regular formula. When I got WIC, the only option was regular or soy formula. I was concerned about using solely soy formula, but I spoke with someone who said it was fine. Also, when switching to regular milk, I was wondering if my daughter would be ok after being only on soy formula, and she had no problems at all.
It has the same nutritional value as regular formula except that it has added lactase to make the lactose in the formula easier to digest. If you are using the Sensitive R.S. it also has Rice Starch added to help with spit up….. Same 20 calories per ounce and everything just broken down a bit more for easier digestion.
