Cloth Diapers??? Is There An Alternative?

My doctor suggested using cloth diapers today. My 1yr old had extremely sensitive skin. My question is…is there any other alternative to cloth diapers? Maybe some sort of dye-free, fragrance free diaper? I’ve tried all the regular brands of diapers already, all the different rash creams, nothing helps. Suggestions would be VERY appreciated!

Your options depend on what it is in the conventional disposable diapers that your baby is allergic too. If it is the chlorine bleach and scents that are causing his rash, then something like Seventh Generation or gDiapers will work. If it is the absorbent gel in disposables that he is allergic to then you will need to try a gel-free diaper like Tushies.
Cloth diapers are 100% better than disposables though and I would definitely recommend getting some to try. If you are hesitant about using them because you are imagining pins and folding and plastic pants — don’t worry! There are many options for cloth diapers now. Pocket diapers and AIOs are as convenient to put on and take off as disposables are, they just require that you do laundry two more times a week! We use Baby Kangas and bumGenius and really love them.http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info…http://www.jamtots.com/Baby-Kangas-One-S…
Since your little one is so sensitive you need to be very careful about the detergent you choose for your diapers. You want something that is free of dyes, scents, enzymes, natural/essential oils, bleach and fabric softeners. Stay away from “free and clear” detergents as they still contain many additives, including enzymes. I highly recommend Country Save — it is low cost, environmentally friendly and rinses very clean from diapers. Here is a great chart regarding detergent choices:http://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/de…
The truth is disposables are expensive. If you get into using “specialty” disposables like Tushies, Seventh Generation and gDiapers it gets REALLY expensive! Save your money and your baby’s bum with cloth!
I found diapers at Harry’s a whole food store here in GA. they had diapers, no fragrance no nothing, not even a picture at the front. You could try those, if I could just remember the name, sorry. I’ll keep looking for you.
My son really responded to Aveeno baby products. They are natural and aloe free.
There are several brands of dye-free, fragrance-free diapers. We’ve used Seventh Generation and like them a lot. We’ve also tried Tushies Tender Care, but we had too much leakage. They are bulky, don’t have much elastic, and have tape (rather than velcro-like) closures. Nature Babycare is also chlorine-free, but I’ve not tried them. The hybrid gDiapers might be an alternative. These – plus several natural creams – are available at Diapers.com.
Try Seventh Generation diapers. They’re a bit more expensive than most sposies, but I’ve heard great things about them. http://www.seventhgeneration.com
Cloth diapers aren’t that bad, I use them, and love them. They’re better for the environment, and cost a lot less.
G-diapers?
Yes, Seventh Generation makes a bleach-free, fragrance-free diaper. There are also gdiapers, which are a cloth cover with a flushable insert. Those two options get crazy expensive though. Cloth diapers will be healthier for baby, the environment, and your wallet.
Feel free to email if you have any questions!
My daughter had a yeast rash from 2 weeks old to 4 months old. I switched to cloth diapers, and it went away almost instantly. They’re not your grandma’s cloth diapers, though! Modern cloth diapers mean no pins, no bleach, no heavy pail of water, and no rubber pants! Most of our diapers are pocket diapers, which are a water proof shell with a pocket inside for an absorbent core. They also snap up and down so that they are one-size fits all, and fit from 8-35 lbs. We also have all in one diapers, which velcro on and off just like a disposable, but you wash them. Very Daddy- and day care-friendly! Of course, we also have the old-fashioned prefolds (not those Gerber ones from Walmart though) and covers, but we don’t use pins. We just wrap the cover around tight and they stay on just fine.
Research cloth before completely ruling it out. I love my cloth diapers and wouldn’t go back to disposables for anything. And it really did clear up a 3 1/2 month rash in a matter of days.
ETA: You’re welcome!
I just searched google for you…..you could try this website?? http://www.alternativebaby.com/ I don’t know what all it has, I didn’t look at it too much, but it seems like it has some easy to use button up cloth diapers, and some diapers made of alternative materials…
Good Luck hun!!
