Grain Free Puppy Formula That Is Lower In Protein Than Orijen?

I have my 5 month old Maltipoo puppy on Orijen Puppy Formula. I’m a little concerned about the high protein (42%) content. I was wondering if there is another brand which is also all natural and grain free that has an acceptable amount of protein, around 28%, for my puppy? if it helps, he is 5 month old and round 3 pounds.

A high protein diet is only dangerous for large breed puppies because it can cause them to grow too fast, which will put stress on their bones and joints. For smaller breed puppies, high protein shouldn’t have adverse effects. If you are worried about other health issues, like kidney disease, etc; check out the article below from the Dog Food Project. High protein diets are generally not harmful to healthy dogs.http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?…
If you want to switch to a lower protein, grain-free kibble you might try:
Wellness CORE (34% protein) or
timberwolf organics wild and natural (36% protein), or
Canidae grain free (34% protein)
Natural balance potato and duck formula (21% protein)

Keep your dog on Orijen…
If you agree with the idea of biologically appropriate diets for dogs then stay on Orijen. They are an amazing high quality food and, if you check out their web site they address the high protein concern. I have my dogs, all of them, on Orijen 6 fish. I have two shih tzus and a doberman and the food is appropriate for all of them…leave it be…

Solid Gold never uses chemical preservatives such as BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin, which may be related to some diseases in pets. It never uses wheat, corn, or soy, which are often genetically modified and common allergens for dogs, causing them to have uncomfortable skin disorders, chew incessantly at their feet, or suffer from chronic problems such as ear infections. It never adds animal or poultry fat to our products, as these are saturated fats that may contribute to heart disease and certain types of cancer.

My dog eats the adult formula, but she has been eating Solid Gold for 3 1/2 out of her 4 years and seems to like it. I’m adding the link to the website, but you can purchase it at PetCo .
With small breeds and medium breeds the protien issue doesnt really apply.
Grain free is going to have protein atleast at 30 but more around 40%.
Blue buffalo
Wellness
canidae
These are all high quality brands and some offer grain free options, but those are all above 28% protein. Their reg. adult formulas have grains in them, but they also have the lower protein.
Orijen and Evo are what I would feed my dogs if I could no longer feed raw unless the dogs are large/giant breed pups(under 18 months).
The protein content should not be an issue with a small breed puppy, only large breeds. I would stick with the Orijen puppy. If you’re set on going lower protein and still grain-free, check out Natural Balance, they do have some potato-based foods, but they really are not as good quality as Orijen is.
why?
there is no reason to fear high protein, for ANY size dog. Wolves aren’t small. They are big animals. They eat high protein.
Foxes are tiny, and they also eat high protein diets. So do COUNTLESS carnivores in between.
dogs need protein for everything. they can’t use carbs, they need protein for energy, for muscle growth, for body repairs, everything.
