How Do You Get A Stool Sample From A Baby?

My doctor sent me home with 4 vials to run some tests on my daughter’s stools. The lab tech said I could put plastic wrap in her diaper to catch the sample so it doesn’t get absorbed, but that just seems cruel to me. I did that for one pee, and her poor butt became so red… waiting for her to poop could be a day or longer, you never know… is there another way other parents have done?
I’m thinking of letting her lay diaper-free on the ground on a plastic changing pad that you can wipe off.. but she can’t be naked all day, it is winter after all.. ideas?

Our son had Rotavirus- and they gave me a scooper to scoop his poop out of his diaper. It was at the lab though.
Can you take what is in the diaper and scoop it after she goes?
What are they checking for?

I haven’t had this particular problem, but if they suggested plastic wrap, maybe wax paper? That would also be non-absorbant but be more sensitive to your daughter’s bottom.
If that doesn’t work I’d say yeah, put her on the floor diaperless. Turn the heat up a little, put a shirt on her, socks and maybe a little hat.
If all else fails just poop-scoop out of the diaper, it SHOULD be enough.
how about cloth diaper for a day or so put a small piece of plastic just under her butt check often
you should just be able to take it out of the diaper. Usually you only need the bag to catch the pee as the diaper absorbs that. I think the lab tech thought the doctor ordered urine when he gave you the bag
I don’t know how old you’re daughter is, but when my son was about 8 months I also had to provide some samples. I was able to read his cues when he was about to poop and took him to change him right afterwards before it got smudged.

I would say if you can read her signs when she is about to poop take her clothes and diaper off and put some plastic underneath and catch it that way, if that doesnt work i would just scoop it out of her diaper that way.
If they are testing for rotavirus, I’m guess your daughter has the runs… That would make it hard for you to get a sample before the diaper absorbed it.
If her stools are fairly firm, you are allowed to just scoop it out. Try to get any differant colors / textures you see. ( Gross, I know )
If her stools are very runny, your best bet is trying to catch the lil one in the act. The problem with letting her lie on the plastic changing mat is that likely, she’ll move and wiggle,etc, and you will have poop everywhere.
If they are super runny, you can ask for a urine collection bag that you could stick around her anus to catch a decent sample, but that would be a last resort.
