I just flew with AA last month with my 4 year old and 2 year old. There is no problem taking the stroller on and checking it at the gate. You will be limited to one “personal item” (purse, diaper bag, etc) and then an additional carry on. As the previous aswer said you can bring more carry-ons if your purchased a seat for you child.
I did get charged for my checked bags! On my flight out I got charged $15/per checked bag. That was for the first one per ticket, it went up after that! I flew with frequent flyer miles but my husband bought a full price ticket. He didn’t have to pay for his checked bag. They said it depends on what fare rate you got. He flew back with us so we checked all the bags under his ticket for free!
They DO NOT charge for checking a car seat on the airplane though! If you plan to bring a car seat you can either check it, take it on the plane for your child (if you purchased your child a seat OR if the flight isn’t full) or you can even check it at the gate with your stroller.
Have a great trip!

They don’t charge for strollers, and they don’t count toward your baggage allowance either. Typically, you can use the stroller until you get to the door of the plane, and then you “gate check” it and leave it there. They will have it waiting at the same spot when you land. I’ve done that even with a double stroller.
However, the laptop and diaper bag will count as your carry-on allowance alone, unless you also have a seat booked for your child. In that case, they also get a carry-on allowance and you would be fine with an extra bag or two.
Information on American’s policy regarding strollers is on their website, at the link below. According to that site, strollers are never subject to carry-on limitations or baggage allowance limitations, but whether you’re able to take it on the plane, must gate check it, or must check it as a bag depends on the size and type of stroller you’re using.
