If You Use Cloth Diapers Please Read?
I ordered this package, based on a recommendation:http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info…
And I ordered a few bum genius 3.0 pockets one sizes too, based on several recommendations. I was thinking of ordering some more prefolds with thirsties covers, are they any good? And can someone give me the basic rundown on how to care for them? I keep hearing different things. I know to use good detergent like All Free and clear, but how many times do I wash them before using them, and what about when I wash them after they’re used?
Also, should I order more inserts for the bum geniuses, or for night use?
Thanks!

I love my prefolds and Thirsties DUO covers! I started CDing DD when she was 18 months. I thought pocket diapers where the way to go for me, but after buying some WAHM made ones that didnt work, I ended up with mostly prefolds and covers. I now I have 18 prefolds, 5 covers, 14 OS pockets that I use for nights and outings. I have hemp doublers (hemp absorbs way more than microfiber but it absorbs slowly so if baby pees fast, it can overflow) that I use for extra for nighttime.
As for washing, you will need to prep prefolds, meaning wash and dry them several times to get htem to their most absorbant. Chinese cotton you willl need to wash about 7 times. Indian cotton about 3-4 times.
After they are used, you can just throw them in the diaper pail (excl breast fed poo breaks apart in water, Like yogurt) so you dont ahve to pre-rinse unless you want to. There are a ton of diff ways to wash them, I mostly handwash in the tub so my method is different. http://www.diaperpin.com/howto.asphttp://www.zany-zebra.com/ <—check out the articles on the right hand side

I LOVE thirsties covers. We used them with prefolds when my son was a newborn and they worked great! If the covers got poo on them we would rinse them in the sink and hang to dry (then throw them in with the diapers). If it was just a wet diaper we would set the cover aside to use for the next diaper change. So basically we keep a rotation of two diaper covers at all times using them every other time (that way they can air out in between) unless it got poo in it.
I used flats with the Thirsties… I LOVE LOVE LOVE THEM!!!!! They held my son’s breast fed poops (MESSY) in great! All you do is put them on, wipe between 2-3 uses (they start smelling like pee) and then wash with a fragrence and dye free soap. I read somewhere to wash them like 6 times. Mine were my mom’s that she used on us (up to almost 27 years ago, on my older sister!) so they did fine.
That’s about the amount I started with it is just right for doing cloth part time, but might be a bit short on quantity for full time. You will almost certainly end up buying more though- I certainly did!
I’ve never used prefolds as they are not readily available here- the ones that are are nearly as expensive as the cheaper all in ones!
Personally I would get some more inserts for the Bumgenius’s If you have a heavy wetter you will need them.
As to washing here is my system- I keep a large lidded bucket near the change table for putting the used nappies in- I do not soak as that seems to set poo stains in my nappies, I add some essential oil to hide any odours and keep the lid on the bucket. I cold wash my nappies on the stains cycle of my machine and do an extra rinse to get out the last of the detergent. I then line dry my nappies in the sun. Apart from the nappies that went through with the first All in one I purchased (it wasn’t colourfast) not a single one of my nappies have a single stain.
For prewashing my nappies I only did it once with all of mine- they are less absorbent before the sixth wash but I didn’t see the point in multiple prewashes
