My 15 Months Old Son Has Severe Diaper Rash From Diarrhea. What Can I Do To Help Him?
I gave my son juice without realizing it had banana’s in it, which he is allergic to. Not a severe allergy but he does get diarrhea and diaper rash from it. Anyways, he has VERY bad diaper rash. I have been using baby powder on it but wanted to see if anyone has any other ideas. Its breaking my heart to see him like this.
1. I hate using creams. Every time he wets himself and I change his diaper its really painful for him when I have to wipe off the cream &/or diarrhea.
2. I tried letting him go diaper-free. It lasted about 3 minuets before he peed on the carpet twice.

my daughter has a sensitive stomache and use to have diarhea often. first i would say give him some kind of pedialite so he doesnt get dehydrated. it may be very painful for him so i would give him some tylenol. it says you dont like the cream but it very important because it protects the rash/ sore from getting more diahrea bacteria in it, keeps the rash from worsening or getting infected. i would use lots of cream, you dont have to wipe him clean, just get all the poop off and make sure theres nothing left behind. so i smother it on, a nice thick coat. to keep the diaper from sticking ato her body and rubbing or tugging, i pour lots of baby powder over the cream. i redo this everytime i change her diaper and the next day the rash is gone.
when its really bad, she would scream and i would feel so bad, but this is all i could really do for her.
I felt the same way when my baby had a bad case of diaper rash and ointments, powders or creams didn’t help a bit. A friend told me to get aloe leaf, not the bottled stuff but the plant itself. You can usually get it at a neighborhood fruit/deli or a farmers market. Peel away the skin and blend the flesh. Apply this to your baby’s bottom at each diaper change (very, very slimy but works wonders!) Hope this helps.
I’m so sorry, I know its hard seeing your little guy in pain!
Meg
I would give him some baby tylenol and try to distract him until he falls asleep, that is about all you can do. Make sure to keep his bottom clean and change his diaper frequently.
I’m sorry if I didn’t help much, but trying to keep him comfortable is the best you can do!
a warm bath to soothe his butt.
then use cornstarch every time you change his diaper. (its been a tried and true method of my family for generations. its great for raw skin)
and when he is just pee wipe him with a wash cloth instead of a wipie.
but obviously with the diarrhea you’ll want to be using wipies.
We constantly bathe our daughter when she has a rash it really helps alot.Soothes her bottom.i let her run around naked for a little while let it air out then i use pinx salv i dont know if thats the right spelling but it works so good
Oatmeal baths. You can get the Aveeno kind in the tiny packets, but I like the industrial size bag I found in the bath aisle at Walmart. Whenever I see a bit of redness, I throw a cup in the tub.
Try the medicated baby powder, if you haven’t already. Just be very careful that he isn’t breathing any of it in. (I dislike the creams because I live in a hot climate, and my daughter hates the sticky feeling.)
If you try the creams, and apply liberally, you can literally just rinse off his butt in the sink. Especially helpful at night. Baby wipes burn and irritate inflammed skin. (I know, because I once used a baby wipe on a cut on my hand, it STUNG!)
You may wish to invest in a carpet cleaner. We have one of those Bissel proheat deals, and I love it. I let my daughter go diaper free often, every day, and she pees on the carpet all the time. lol. But, I am able to clean it up easily, and my 4 year old son is always spilling something, so it’s worth the money!
Good luck, and I hope the little guy feels better soon.
What’s the best way to treat diaper rash?
Keep your baby clean and dry by changing his diaper frequently. That may mean getting him up at night for a diaper change.
Rinse his diaper area well at each diaper change. Some parents keep cotton balls and a squirt bottle or an insulated container of warm water at the changing table for easy, gentle cleanups. Pat your baby’s skin dry — don’t rub!
Using a barrier ointment — one that forms a protective layer on the skin — after every diaper change can help protect your baby’s irritated skin from stool and urine. There are several good barrier ointments on the market, including petroleum ointment and white zinc oxide, which is thicker and good for protecting very sensitive skin.
Put your baby’s diaper on loosely or use a diaper that’s a little big on him to allow for better air circulation. If your baby wears cloth diapers, don’t use plastic pants. If you buy disposables, try a different brand to see if that helps.
When the weather is warm and your baby can play outside or in a room with an easy-clean floor, leave his diaper (and ointment) off for as long as possible every day. Exposure to the air will speed healing.
Consider letting your baby sleep with a bare butt whenever he has a rash. A plastic sheet under the cloth sheet will help protect the mattress.
The ONLY thing that worked for my daughter was A&D Ointment. Just the normal kind that’s not a cream. It’s in a brown orange and white tube. No zinc oxide. She has really sensitive skin and got a rash any time she had diarrhea more than once in a row. Instead of using wipes, I would put her in a lukewarm bath to get it all off. If you look at the packaging even for the sensitive wipes, they may be fragrance free but they have alcohol. So obviously they would sting if applied to the rash. My pediatrician recommended using a warm washcloth or soft wet paper towel. Let them “air-dry” as long as you can, and change them frequently. (Duh.) I’ve also heard corn starch works well to absorb the moisture, but I’ve never tried it. My daughter would get it so bad her skin would break open and bleed, and if I had trouble getting rid of it, it would turn into a yeast infection. Not fun for anyone. Once I started using the A&D, it never got to that point again. I recommended it to my friend to use on her 2 kids and she had the same results. Hope this helps, because I’ve been there!
I have been through this SO MANY times! My son cannot have apple Juice, I got best answer when I answered this same question to someone with the same problem. Here is the link to the Answer I gave.
I got Best Answer so my answer is directly below the question.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…
