I am looking into making my own cloth diapers, the all in one kind. If you have a pattern you can email me or a link for a free pattern, I’d really appreciate it!!
Also, any tips and hints about cloth diapering (what exactly I need to do from Step 1 on) would be appreciated too…
Thanks!

Cloth diapers are awesome! Less rash, cuter, no weird chemicals, less waste, more convenient (yes, that’s right), and less expensive! I have a treasure trove of links in my MySpace blog. Feel free to email me if you have MySpace and want to read it. For now, check out http://www.diaperpin.com. It has lots of great information. You can also look at http://www.cottonbabies.com. I buy all my diapers there, but they have lots of instructional articles there. As far as a pattern, I just used a diaper that I liked (Kissaluvs) and copied it. You’re on the right track. Step 1 is surfing the web and reading everything you can! Kudos and good luck!
Edit: Jo-C, thank you for the trip back to 1970! It’s great to be reminded of what our mothers did for us. I’m sure some people still do those things, but nobody I know diapers like that anymore!

I think this link is what you’re looking for! Good for you. Cloth diapers are the best and babies wearing them tend to potty train earlier as they don’t like wet diapers when they get older. Throw away diapers don’t feel uncomfortable, so kids take longer to train.
I cloth diapered my kids, at least part time that is.
I liked helping them have healthier skin & making less of a negative impact on landfills with disposable diapers.
We used bum genius diapers & fuzzi bunz diapers & loved them
1. Get a new big five gallon bucket (lowes or home depot)& an old pillow case. Use the pillow case to line your five gallon bucket and this can be your less expensive diaper pail. Put some organic or bio degradable laundry detergent in the bottom of the pillowcase. Put soiled diapers in pillow case & put the lid on the bucket. When the bucket is full, dump the pillow case & the diapers in the washer.
2. Buy at least one big high quality wet bag from a diapering on-line store, storkwarehouse, wildflower diapers, cotton babies, etc. You will really need wet bags when you are out & have a few nasty diapers to hual home to wash. Wet bags keep the smell down. Then you just wash the wet bag & the diaper.
3. Sign up for cotton babies newsletter. You will get advance notice of sales, discontinued & second quality merchandise on sale. I have used a lot of their seconds & have been very happy.
I’m not sure why you would choose cloth over disposable. Other than you think you might be helping the environment. When I was about twelve my mom was gone most the time. I was responsible for my bro. who happened to be using cloth diapers. Here it is straight.
1. there is the task of pining a diaper on a moving target. ouch! and then wahh! (for baby)
2. then there are the plastic pants that go over to hold in leaks. Ha! Honey the don’t let the babies skin breath. Prepare to use lot of Butt Paste (you can find it at wal-mart).
3. once the dipper is soiled there is the task of rinsing. If it’s wet only the smell of urine never really goes away cause you got to wait till you have more to wash. So keep rinsing and wringing.
4. If it’s a stinker… hold it over the toilet shake, plunge, hold on tight and flush, and since babies pooh is not solid, this might take awhile.
Bottom line you end up using A LOT OF WATER! lots of soap and don’t forget the electricity and gas that run your washer and dryer. This will kill your skin and take up a lot of time you could be spending with your kid. And it really doesn’t save the earth or your money. It just wastes it in a way you don’t really think about.
PS If you really wanna do some good put in energy saving bulbs. And find out more about what you can recycle locally.

GREAT VERY simple patterns for AIO’s and Pocket diapers. I myself prefer pocket diaper simple and easy and wash better Also drying is faster.
More sites to read that are great…http://www.diaperjungle.com/sewing-cloth…http://www.mothering.com/discussions/for…http://www.geocities.com/mytafadhali/Dia…http://www.zany-zebra.com/free-cloth-dia…
List of things you need for sewing…
PUL or ProCare that you can get at http://www.diapershop.com or http://www.wazoodle.com I have bought from both and had great customer service from both however shipping was much quicker from wazoodle.
Micro fleece or suede cloth for the inner there are many others BUT both of this are what I used when I made diapers both for my own children and when I made diapers to sell. They both wick the moisture away to keep baby dry.
inner or soaker material
hemp jersey is both thin and holds lots also micro terry is great I used the micro terry for my pocket diapers as is dries quick and holds lots. You can pick some up in the auto dept at Walmart.
Elastic
I used the clear swimmers elastic
aplix
unless you have a snap press ( pretty pricey for making your own) or know a WAHM in your area who has one that you can use you will need Aplix ( hook and loop) for a closure.
As for what you need for a newborn stash wise this is what I suggest and what I used myself for my son who I did cloth with from the day he came home from the NICU.
For a cheap route you can do prefolds and covers since newborns to go thru LOTS of diapers if you go that route I’d have 3 to 5 dozen that will get you thru 2 to 3 days and thru the actually washing and drying without being in a bind or taking the chance of running out.
IF you have the money I say go with 2 dozen Bumkins with 2 to 3 Fuzzi bunz each with 2 micro terry stuffers OR two dozen fuzzi bunz with 1 stuffer each during the day. It is much more expensive BUT so much easier for everyone ( bumkins may be easier for daddy since they are velcro/aplix not snaps)
I had a mix of both and ended up buying another dozen bumkins and just did bunkins till he hit meds then I did lots of WAHM and diapers I made myself but still did bumkins when we went out and ALWAYS did Fuzzi Bunz at night. I learned the joys of wool sometime between med and large and so LOTS of his large stash was wool. I did LOVE kissaluvs they are great with a prowrap cover I liked the bummis covers better once they are in med size but before then I had a problem when VJ was small and had skinny legs with the bummis gapping and not holding in like the prowraps. I know lots but if you have any questions feel free to email me anytime both of making or using.
OH washing
buy a few bottles of sports wash in the hunting dept at walmart you won’t ever have a problem with your diapers getting stinky from build up and it has no scent and helps to keep the covers from wicking. Once i started using the sports wash I never had a problem. Use half a cap for a full load and that’s all. With this you don’t have to do the tons of washing a rinsing and all like if you use the detergent where you usually want to run it thru another cycle to make sure all the soap is out. I did once a week add a few drops of tea tree oil to make sure no germs were in my I mean my sons diapers LOL Cloth diapers are very addicting LOL have fun.
For a quick run down, visit http://www.diapershop.com — they’ve got a pretty extensive FAQ section that will help answer most of your questions.
As far as exactly what to buy–no one can make that decision but you! It all depends upon what you like, what’s easiest for you to use, what fits your baby, and what you can afford! There’s not enough space to get into a lot of detail here, but you are welcome to email me through the Answers link and I can help you sort through your preferences & what would probably work best for you.
There are many different types of fabric that you can use for sewing your own diapers. I gravitate towards extra receiving blankets, old towels, microfiber and old t-shirts for diapers & absorbency, and PUL, thrift store wool clothing and high-quality fleece (**NOT** from Walmart or Joann’s) for covers. I do not own a snap press and can’t justify the cost at this point, so I use 100% hook & loop tape (one name brand is Ve*&ro). I also use a bunch of different construction methods. Again, please email me and i can give you lots more info than can really fit well here.
Good luck with your new addiction–if it isn’t yet, it will be soon!!

BTW, do you have any idea WHAT THESE BLOODY THINGS ARE LIKE TO WASH. Scum from Hell. Go with disposable.
