I ordered this package, based on a recommendation:http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info…
And I ordered a few bum genius 3.0 pockets one sizes too, based on several recommendations. I was thinking of ordering some more prefolds with thirsties covers, are they any good? And can someone give me the basic rundown on how to care for them? I keep hearing different things. I know to use good detergent like All Free and clear, but how many times do I wash them before using them, and what about when I wash them after they’re used?
Also, should I order more inserts for the bum geniuses, or for night use?
Thanks!

I do workshops in my town that gives information on cloth diapers. I do the cost analysis, explain the washing process, etc. etc. but parents still choose disposable anyway. They love the convenience and could care less about anything else. I am a full time working mom and I still have time to do 2 extra loads of laundry a week. It’s so easy to cloth diaper a baby these days, and the environmental factor is huge.
I really think these parents don’t care about the thousands of tons of diapers that our next generation of adults will have to somehow manage. I am so frustrated… I do this workshop for free because I don’t want my kids to suffer in mountains of trash for the rest of their lives.

I’ve been using All free and Clear and I’ve had some issues with leaking. I’ve started using Dreft which my mother in law suggested and have had no problems thus far. I also use a 1/4 cup of baking soda and a downy ball 1/2 full of vinager( only opens in rinse cycle) in every wash. Is Dreft really that bad to use? If it’s ok for baby clothes why not cloth diapers? Oh and my baby has not had any diaper rash form using Dreft either.

I am new to cloth diapering and have just started to wash my diapers. Here is how I’ve been washing them:
Cold wash with 1/3 cup baking soda
Hot wash/Cold rinse with 1/3 cup baking soda and All free and clear w/ half of recommended detergent
Cold rinse w/ downy ball half full of vinegar
Cold rinse again to remove vinegar smell.
How many times do I wash them this way? Is it ever ok to just wash them on hotwash/cold rinse with half of detergent and vinegar? Is it common for cloth diapers to create lint balls when you first start washing them and does this ever stop? Also how do you know when you need to strip your diapers?
Like I said I’m totally new to cloth diapers and want to make sure I wash them right so I get the maximum absorbancy and softness.

My 3 month old son has had a nasty diaper rash pretty much since he was born. We change him frequently, use dye free, fragrance free mild soap, and have switched from wipes to bactine and baby powder. All of these changes have noticeably helped, but he’s still pretty miserable. I’ve been entertaining the thought of switching him to cloth diapers, but need some advice.
We currently only spend about 25 a month on diapers. We are on an extremely fixed income, and the prices I’ve seen for some single cloth diapers on the internet is comparable to what we pay for around 60 disposables. That seems a bit daunting to me, so before I even bring the idea up to my husband, I’d like to know what brand we’d be getting, how many we’d need and about how much it’s going to cost.
So my question is what brands do any cloth diapering moms out there recommend, and about how many do we need? All I know so far is that I want the ones with Velcro, and preferably the kind with the insert, though it’s not necessary.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’ve decided on using cloth once my husband and I have a baby. I’m trying to price it and figure it out… we’re TTC now and I just wanted to have a more educated budget and idea of what’s up. So I have a few Q’s… please answer if you can and feel free to give any more info you think would be helpful…
1-What is the best brand?.. and why? (Fuzzi Bunz are the ones I’ve been considering.. anyone know how they are??)
2-How many diapers is reasonable to get in each size?
3-Do cloth diapers help or hurt diaper rash?
4-How often does a baby need to be changed while wearing a cloth diaper?
5-Should a special detergent be used as to be more sensative to the skin of the baby? … if so.. do you have any recommendations?
Again, please feel free to add on info that you think would be helpful. Thanks so much!
