Why Isnt There A Requirement For People Who Receive Welfare Check To Do Community Service?
I am just wondering why there isnt a system in place that would force people who are on Welfare to give back to the community that is feeding them by doing community service. It would be very simple:
1. The person and all their children must report to Social Services once a week, and prove that they are using the welfare check on bottles and diapers by bringing in store receipts. If they dont do this, then they would not get another check and their children would be taken in by social services until the person has purchased a weeks worth of bottles and diapers.
2. Once they prove they are taking care of their children’s needs, the welfare recipient would then have to do some sort of community service (Mow lawns for public parks, pick up trash off the highway, etc.) for 8 hours a week. During this time, their children would be put in a daycare set up and run by social services. The children would receive one free meal while at this daycare.

The largest group of welfare recipients, by a huge margin, are children. Would you put them to work instead of going to school?
Almost all the remaining welfare recipients are the disabled and the blind. Just what work do you propose that they do?
You want Social Services to take the children from their parents? Now that’s a brilliant idea when the system is already unable to take care of the foster children in its care.
You want to have the government set up a system of day care for the children of the poor? Just where do you think the money is coming from? Just how much money do you think we currently spend on welfare recipients per person? The average benefit nationally is less than $400 per FAMILY per MONTH.
In Wisconsin welfare recipients are only allowed welfare for up to 5 years They are required to do some type of work and/or be enrolled into some type of a job skill training program. I do not know how it works in the rest of the country but here the programs works fairly well There has been a significant reduction in the welfare role Now If we can get a handle on women having kids just for child support checks we would have it down pat
I been saying that for years…let’em earn it
Why not just dump welfare, and have employers be able to take a 1-year 1st year exemption on hiring people? Welfare’s a joke, it breeds dependency.
I live in Michigan, and social services here is called the Family Independence Agency. Welfare recipients are required to actively seek employment and/or training, in order to keep receiving Welfare benefits. Making people do community service, while understandable in its motivation, will not solve the problem of revolving-door welfare. If people are doing community service, they are not trying to become employed and get off welfare. I think the FIA Work First program gives welfare recipients dignity and a hand- up out of their situation. The welfare rolls have consistently declined in Michigan as a result.
1) Do you really want to spend MORE tax dollars paying someone to sit there and go through store reciepts for EVERY SINGLE person on welfare? Having worked in ‘the system’ for a good four years, I can tell you that if there are any Welfare Queens living in big houses with fancy cloths and corvettes… I never saw them. Do people use the system? Yes. This happens because when you let the government take over all of a person’s bills and punishes the person for doing ANYTHING on their own. You get them government sponsored housing and government food and government child care and government reduced utillities. Then you tell them if they get a job or start proving that they CAN function on their own, the government is going to take EVERYTHING away. This does not produce a whole bunch of people who are inspired to get off welfare.
2) There are many states that do this. I disagree, personally. It’s kinda hard to go find a paying job when you’re out mowing grass for free.
Clearly, you don’t know the first damn thing about the welfare system. Educate yourself before running off at the mouth.
well you got me started. welfare makes me so mad. most of them figure out ways to be on the system forever. why look for a job when you can eat better then the working people and get paid to sit and watch tv. there are a few reason to be on welfare but not very many. i also can’t stand the ones who you the ssi system either when they don’t have a problem. yep i just love paying for these losers. and i just love when i go to the store where i work and see these losers buying big steaks and lots of soda and junk that isn’t cheap never the cheap brand. go figure! the don’t have enough rules and regulations in place. but the would figure out how to get around that since they have all day to think about it why the rest of us are at work. also when they get money to fix a car or something makes me mad why fix their car when the don’t have a job makes no sense to me but guess they have to figure out someway to blow are tax dollars. well to the few who truly need it i am sorry and to the ones who don’t you know who you are the one getting welfare but sitting here reading this on a better computer than me get off you lazy butts and go get a job. most of them won’t do the service they will find away out but it did sound like a good idea. i know a girl that had to fill out so many applications for jobs a week but would the wrong phone number on it so they couldn’t get a hold of her that is what i call a loser who screws the system. one more complaint i could barely afford my heating bills this year but they were warm with no worries, but as i was told life ain’t always fair is it
And just who is going to make sure that is being done? The system is so over-worked now, there is no policing. Sounds good on paper, just don’t thing it would work. Too many people are on assistance. BAD IDEA…SORRY
That is a wonderful idea and I work with all of those people that you are talking about. They do suck the life out of the system and no they use their money on crack, 40 oz. beers and women lol. It probably won’t change though.
okay, so the people who use the system and are working, but have no transportation, have to take a day off work, catch 3 maybe 4 busses to get to the welfare office wait all day while they could be working, or off working for free when they should be at their job, then take all those same buses back all the while carting the kids around with them in the snow, rain and all that good stuff. next time you are driving around in your warm car while it’s snowing, check out the side walks on the bus line. no, i’m not on welfare, but i have had friends who had used the system and are leading better lives because of it. watch what you say. the way the economy is these days, you never know if you will be standing in that line.
There is quite a bit of ignorance when it comes to the welfare system in the United States. Lets first take the statistic out that most of those who are on welfare are single mothers with one or two children who do not have the ability to pay for child care and also work at the same time. Average day care services in the state of Illinois are about $400/month PER child. $800 a month is a hefty amount out of someone’s pocket if you are already living at or below the poverty line. In addition, why is there an overwhelming belief that the welfare system in America allows people to live like Kings or Queens; in reality the average monthly check for a single woman with 1 child is less than $800 per month (they can also qualify for about $200 per month in food stamps). The question becomes, how does a single mother care for her children on such little money and also try to find a job? The welfare system in the United States needs to be improved with job training and job assistance services which are not widely provided (including in Wisconsin -which was posted way earlier-).
To the ignorant: It is easy to turn a cheek when you are a working and blind to the issues that come along with having to struggle at or below the poverty line; research and look inside yourselves. Those of you whom are religious remember the words of Jesus regarding helping the poor.

Most states have required job seeking and job training for welfare recipients. However because of the cost associated with this training (which the government pays for) many states are beginning to drop the requirement. When you add up the cost of the training or the amount that state employees are paid to sit at a job center for people to apply, the cost of the computers, internet service etc. really the cost is exhorbatant. Also, most of these people have children so now the state is paying for the children to be in a daycare facility. For me to send my two children to daycare it runs about $1200.00 a month and the state pays about the same for the children of welfare recipients to attend daycare. Not only that, but many of these daycares have state funded food programs for the children because the parents can’t afford to send meals with them to daycare. Most families get very little cash assistance. A family of three or 4 may get $450.00 a month. Who can live off of that really? It is often not a case of not wanting to work, but rather that they do not have the skills to aquire employment sufficient enough to support their families. Also, daycare is expensive and it is not worth working if your whole months income goes to daycare. It is easy to judge and believe that the system and the people on it are no good lazy losers, but we should search deeper before we pass judgement.
before you pass judge, have you ever been in thier shoes or do you know of a person.no you probably do not.Not takeing sides, but yes thewelfare system does have some setbacks.because they need education and also a job. They make them volunteer for 40 hours a week.or sit in a classroom learning lifeskills on how to keep a job and also how too get a job.which isnot bad. a lot of people do notknow how to .furthermore how to conduct theirself on an interview.Or how to handle thier self in public.so thatis what the classroom setting is for if they can not find them a site too volunteer they sit in a clasroom all day and week.they need education too get a real job not just any job to pay bills. they will be in the same rut they will stay at the poverty level.we need to push education not just a job we need solutions to get people education.if they can go to school geta degree then maybe a real job then poverty level comes down .ifwe dont help peopleto know that their is more to life .theywill never know.lesson to anyone that has a little more than someone if there comes a person in your path . maybe you can encourage instead of pointing fingers help that person to the bestof your ability that is onestep outof a poverty mindset.
In doing research for a debate on the welfare system I came across this site. There are may different views concerning this matter. The system was into place by FDR to help people out of work. I think the system works when it is carefully guarded. My main issue regarding welfare are the single mothers having 4/5 children. Standing in line at the grocery store, I was behind a very young mother of 6. All under the age of what appeared to be 9. The children were out of control, the oldest was doing the parenting while mom was on the phone telling her babies to “Shut the hell up, can’t you see I’m on the phone.” The baby was climbing out of the cart and right into my arms. There I stand with this precious baby in my arms while mom is busy tending to her personal conversation and ignoring her children. I noticed in her grocery cart was all kinds of brand name foods, while I’m buying store brand to save money. When it came time to pay, I noticed mom used food stamps (card). I love all children and they should not have to pay for the mistakes of their parents, but I have a difficult time with the government handing out money to women who continue to get pregnant and do nothing to help make a better life for themselves and their children. I am a single mother, two children, working and going back to school. +
Why are there a lot of single parent welfare families? Because welfare helped to generate this itself.
There’s also a lot to do with personal responsibility. If you can’t afford to have a child, don’t have one. The real big issue are the people, single or not, who have multiple children and can’t even afford to have one. I don’t mind giving a helping hand, but at this point, a lot of the “help” is just perpetuating people to be irresponsible.
All our social programs are doing is making us weak and dependent on the government, less capable of fending for ourselves.
And to people trying to be righteous and saying not to judge, I’ve known a few people on welfare, all of which have multiple children, when they can barely afford one. They’ve all also had poor work ethic. I know it’s only my experience, but that’s what I have to go on, as well as psychology teaching us that you reward people for being irresponsible and lazy, they’ll continue to be such.
I think people should be required to work after a few years on welfare. The person who said the average benefit is about 400 per month is clearly wrong. Recipient of welfare can get food stamps, medicaid, assistance with housing, etc. etc. etc. The food stamps alone are $200 per month for a family of 2. You want mother’s to stay at home with their kids? Fine…I’ll go with that. But once a woman’s children are over the age of 5, they should be in school already. She should have time to work while her kids are in school…as long as she doesn’t keep having them. Sadly, people who are already in a poverty stricken situation will continue having children thus keeping her at home with her additional children. I am totally in favor of helping people get back on their feet, but when it becomes a way of life for the family…I see a problem. I receive Pell Grants to go to school so that I can become a productive member of society. I am a full time student and fully employed. I am much more in favor of educating mothers so they can obtain reasonable paying jobs, than simply providing rent assistance, food assistance, medical assistance on an ongoing basis. The problem is that most don’t want to work. If they did…they would have a job or two or three. I have worked 3 jobs before to care for myself. They weren’t the greatest jobs…but I have never received any assistance other than Pell Grants for school. I pay for my own health coverage. I receive birth control with a $20 copay per month. There are no more excuses. We can’t sit back and watch people with the attitude of “Yay! I’m going to have a baby.” and have no Plan A of how they will provide for it.
I am sorry I disagree with the comment made that “If people are doing community service, they are not trying to become employed and get off welfare”. Hear me out if you work 40 Hours A week for community service for 400 a month welfare that would be movtivation to get a job. hey i can get welfare and do community service for 400 per month or i could get a job and work 40 hours a week and make 1200.The issue isnt welfare its the people to lazy to work thats the issue. If making people work is wrong lets cut the mexicans a check and just send them to mexico, it doesnt work that was because they work for everything they have i respect that i dont respect welfare mommas get filet mignon and fresh seafood on a government assistance card they should get chuck steak and beans if you ask me and have to work for it thank you
